Prepared environment

A room deliberately arranged so that the space itself teaches, and the adult can step back.

In plain English

What it actually means

Everything is child-height and within reach. Materials sit on open shelves in a deliberate order, roughly easiest to hardest, left to right. There is exactly one of each thing. Objects are real and breakable rather than plastic, because a child who is trusted with a glass jug learns to carry it carefully. The room is beautiful enough to be worth looking after, and uncluttered enough to think in.

Why it matters to you

On a tour

On a tour, this is the thing you can actually assess in ten minutes: is the room set up for the children, or for the adults?

Tours run mid-morning, during the work cycle, year-round.
