Golden beads
Gold-colored beads arranged as units, ten-bars, hundred-squares and thousand-cubes, used to make the decimal system physical.
In plain English
What it actually means
A child holds a single bead, then a bar of ten, then a flat square of a hundred, then a cube of a thousand. The difference between one and a thousand stops being an abstraction and becomes something with weight in the hand. Children go on to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and long division with the beads, years before they would meet the same operations on paper elsewhere.
