Freedom within limits

Children choose their own work, from the things they have been shown, inside firm ground rules.

In plain English

What it actually means

This is the phrase most often quoted and most often misread. The freedom is real: no one tells a child what to do at 10:15. The limits are equally real: you may only choose work you have been presented, materials must be returned complete for the next person, and you may not disturb someone else’s concentration. A room without the limits is not Montessori, it is chaos with wooden toys.

Why it matters to you

On a tour

If a school cannot describe its limits crisply, be careful.
