If you take one thing from a Montessori tour, take the shape of the morning. Between roughly 9:00 and 12:00, nothing interrupts the children: no bell, no whole-class instruction, no specials rotation dropped into the middle.
Concentration has a runway
Watch a classroom for a full morning and the pattern is obvious. Children drift for the first stretch, settle, and then work hard — often for a very long time on something an adult would find repetitive. A school that interrupts at the forty-minute mark harvests only the drifting and never sees the rest.
Every interruption costs the whole room
A scheduled activity dropped into the middle of the morning does not just affect the children it was aimed at. It resets the concentration of everyone who can hear it. This is why Montessori schools protect the cycle so fiercely and why teachers give presentations inside it, one child or small group at a time, rather than stopping it.
It transfers
The specific skill being practiced — staying with something difficult past the point of novelty — is the one that later shows up as being able to revise, or write an essay, or sit an exam. A six-year-old who can stay with something hard for an hour has an advantage no curriculum provides.
How to check it on a tour
Ask what time the work cycle starts and what interrupts it. If the answer includes circle time, snack time and a specials rotation, the cycle is not really there, whatever the sign says.
