A school tour is a sales meeting that both sides pretend is not one. The tour guide is warm, the corridors are tidy, and by the end you have absorbed a great deal of atmosphere and very little information. The fix is simple: decide before you arrive what you are going to look at, and spend the first ten minutes looking at it rather than talking.
Ask for mid-morning, and insist politely
A Montessori classroom at 4 pm tells you nothing at all. The morning work cycle — roughly 9:00 to 12:00 — is the part of the day the whole method is built around, and it is the only part worth watching. If a school only offers late-afternoon tours, that is itself a piece of information.
Watch before you talk
Stand at the back and say nothing for ten minutes. You are looking for one thing above all: a room full of children concentrating, with no adult managing it. That quality of quiet is very hard to fake and almost impossible to manufacture for a visitor.
- Are children doing different things?At any moment one child should be at the map cabinet, two at the golden beads, one writing. If everyone is on the same activity, the word on the sign is doing a lot of work.
- Where is the teacher?Usually kneeling beside one child. If the adult is addressing the whole room for most of your visit, ask when presentations happen.
- Is there one of each material?Not sets of thirty. Scarcity is deliberate — it is how children learn to wait, ask and negotiate.
- Do children put work away unprompted?Care of the environment is the curriculum, not tidiness enforcement.
Then ask the four awkward questions
When does the work cycle run, and what interrupts it? What is the age span in this room? Where did this teacher train, and for which age range? And what happens in the kindergarten year? Any school should answer all four immediately. A vague answer is an answer.
Bring your child
Watching your own child in the room tells you things no tour guide can. Some children walk in and start работать — sorry, start working — within five minutes. Some cling. Neither is a verdict, but both are data you cannot get from a website, including this one.
