Second grade, in the middle of the cycle
Second grade is the quiet year, and it is the one that pays. The child already knows how the classroom works and is no longer new; there is a full year of momentum before the responsibilities of the third-grade year arrive.
What “second grade” means in a mixed-age classroom
Montessori classrooms are deliberately mixed-age, so “second grade” is a translation rather than a room. Your child is not in a class of thirty children born the same year, moving through the same page on the same morning. They are in a community spanning about three years, working at the level they are actually ready for — which for most children means ahead in some subjects and still consolidating in others. What follows is what the second-grade year typically looks like inside that structure.
The second-grade year at Mills
- The advantage of not being the newestIn a mixed-age classroom a child spends one year learning the room, one year working at full speed inside it, and one year helping run it. Second grade is the middle one, and it is usually where the most ground is covered.
- Multiplication and division, concretely firstOperations that are conventionally taught as procedures to memorise are built here with materials, so a child sees why long multiplication works before writing it down. Abstraction is the destination, not the starting point.
- Grammar as something you handleParts of speech are introduced with physical symbols and sentence-building rather than as terminology to be tested. Children who can move a clause around a table tend to write better sentences than children who can label one.
- Writing gets longWork that took a morning in first grade now runs for days — research on an animal, a country, a period of history, written up properly and presented to the class.
- Still one building, still one drop-offA second-grader and a two-year-old sibling are in the same school. That is not a pedagogical point, but it is one of the two or three things parents actually feel.
Schedules and rates for elementary
Elementary rates are the same across every elementary year. Elementary runs as a full day or an extended full day — there is no morning-only elementary place on the published schedule. If you need something else, call the office at 650-616-9000 and ask rather than assuming either way.

Monthly amounts. Annual tuition is based on a 180-day school year and may be paid in full for a discount — 5% before May 1st, 3% after — or in ten installments. A $450 annual materials and testing fee applies to kindergarten and elementary, plus a one-time $200 enrollment fee for new students.

What parents ask about second grade
- My child is ahead in reading and behind in math. Does that work here?That is the ordinary case rather than the exception, and it is the main practical argument for a mixed-age classroom: a child works at the level they are at, subject by subject, without either being held at the class pace or publicly moved up.
- How will I know how my child is doing without letter grades?Children are assessed continuously by teachers who watch them work daily, and families receive detailed reporting. Ask on the tour how often and in what form — we would rather you heard the current answer from the office than read last year's here.
