Fifth grade — the last year, used properly
Fifth grade at Mills is the end of the line, and we think that is a feature. The year has a job: send an eleven-year-old into middle school able to manage their own time, work without being chased, and stand up and explain something to a room. Those are the three things middle school assumes on day one and almost never teaches.
What “fifth grade” means in a mixed-age classroom
Montessori classrooms are deliberately mixed-age, so “fifth grade” is a translation rather than a room. Your child is not in a class of thirty children born the same year, moving through the same page on the same morning. They are in a community spanning about three years, working at the level they are actually ready for — which for most children means ahead in some subjects and still consolidating in others. What follows is what the fifth-grade year typically looks like inside that structure.
The fifth-grade year at Mills
- Built for the handoverEverything about the final year points outward. Longer independent projects, more self-scheduling, more presenting — deliberately more like what comes next than what came before.
- Mathematics into early algebraRatio, proportion, powers and the beginnings of algebraic thinking. A child who built these ideas physically in the lower years tends to meet the notation as a shorthand for something already understood.
- The oldest children in the schoolBeing eleven in a building whose youngest children are two is a particular kind of responsibility, and it is one of the things families tell us they notice most about the final year.
- Leaving from a school, not a preschoolA child finishing fifth grade here has been in one Montessori community for as long as nine years. Most Montessori families in this area have already changed schools twice by this point.
- Then middle schoolChildren go on to public and private middle schools. We will help you think about the move, and we will not pretend to place anybody anywhere.
Schedules and rates for elementary
Elementary rates are the same across every elementary year. Elementary runs as a full day or an extended full day — there is no morning-only elementary place on the published schedule. If you need something else, call the office at 650-616-9000 and ask rather than assuming either way.

Monthly amounts. Annual tuition is based on a 180-day school year and may be paid in full for a discount — 5% before May 1st, 3% after — or in ten installments. A $450 annual materials and testing fee applies to kindergarten and elementary, plus a one-time $200 enrollment fee for new students.

What parents ask about fifth grade
- Will my child be ready for a conventional middle school?The habits elementary Montessori builds — managing your own time, working unsupervised, presenting your work — are exactly the ones middle school expects. What we will not do is publish claims about admissions or outcomes; ask us on a tour what families have actually gone on to do.
- Is it strange to change schools at eleven rather than earlier?It is the normal pattern here, and it lines up with the ordinary move into middle school rather than adding an extra transition at five or six. That is the entire argument for a school that runs to fifth grade.
- Can a child join for fifth grade only?It is possible subject to availability, and enrollment is open year-round — but a single final year is a real conversation rather than a form. Call 650-616-9000 and let us be straight with you about whether it would serve your child.
